𝗩𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗼 is a dizzy sensation where either you feel like you are spinning or the world around you is spinning. It can be difficult to remain upright, you may feel nauseous, out of balance or “off”.

𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘅𝘆𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗼 (𝗕𝗣𝗣𝗩) is one of the most common types of vertigo, in which otoconia (inner ear crystals) get dislodged in one of the semicircular canals in the inner ear.

Inner Ear Canal

This causes your brain to get different information from the nerves of one ear than the other creating the dizziness or spinning sensations you may feel during certain head movements. The sensation typically lasts less than 1 minute.

  • Trauma to the head

  • Infection

  • Meniere’s disease

  • Aging

I often see this in people who may be changing their head position frequently such as going from standing to lying down in a workout class, bending over with their head upside down, looking up, looking down at their phone or computer.

PTs are trained to evaluate your vestibular system and will assess your eye movement, balance, and positional tests. Typically if one of the positional tests is positive for BPPV, your PT will treat you right then and perform a maneuver that will move the crystals from the semicircular canal back into the inner ear. This typically will completely get rid of your vertigo! There may be other exercises for your eye and head movement to further clear any symptoms up, but 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙢𝙮 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙞𝙛 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙡𝙮 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝘽𝙋𝙋𝙑 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙜𝙚𝙩 90% 𝙤𝙧 𝙜𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙤𝙡𝙫𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩.
